Manufacture of tungsten carbide corrugating roll
New tungsten carbide corrugated roll
A tungsten carbide corrugating roll is different from the traditional ordinary one. Firstly, the heat treatment of its body is different. The requirement for flute precision before coating is much higher and an automatic CNC grinding machine has to be employed to complete the profiling of the roll. Secondly, coating is very crucial to ensure the hardness cohesion of the tungsten carbide coating and the effective polishing treatment. Polishing is the most crucial process after coating. As the tungsten carbide corrugating roll is different from the common work piece, traditional grinding wheels cannot be used to polish the roll due to its unique profile and extremely high surface hardness (like diamond).
Old corrugating rolls retrofitted into tungsten carbide corrugating rolls
First, the old rolls have to be strictly inspected and then can be retrofitted into tungsten carbide corrugating rolls (Note: Some old rolls can't be retrofitted if there is a great disparity in heat treatment).
Tungsten carbide corrugating roll refurbishing
The coating thickness of a tungsten carbide corrugating roll is usually 0.1mm. The coating wears away as the roll is in use. So the roll has to be refurbished after some time. Our refurbishment consists of stripping off the thin residual containing, then lightly regrinding the profile, re-coating and finishing. The diameter of the refurbished one is exactly the same as that of a new roll.
Wear comparison of ordinary corrugating rolls and tungsten carbide corrugating rolls
The life span of a tungsten carbide roll is generally 3-6 times longer than that of an ordinary one.
The flute height of an ordinary roll has a great variation during its service life, thus the quality of the board produced will be affected. The clearance between the medium and the glue applicator should be 0.1mm-0. 2mm. But when the crown of the corrugating roll wears 0. 1mm, the clearance will be even larger, thus leading to excessive glue applied. Then too much moisture will result in soft and warped board. Tungsten carbide corrugating rolls have smaller flute height variations and longer life. The board produced has high quality.
Wear will be greatest in the center of an ordinary corrugating roll, and then the roll cannot be used to process a wider web because the paper edges will have to bear too much pressure or uniform glue application cannot be achieved in the board center (bubbling), At this time, you have to regrind both ends of the roll for paper width changes and maintain its life-span. Tungsten carbide corrugating rolls are resistant to wear and this does not occur even with changes of paper web width.
As ordinary corrugating rolls wear fast, so its original flute height is relatively high (thus the take-up-ratio is also high) so as to ensure the life-span. With high wear-resistance performance, tungsten carbide corrugating rolls are designed with lower flute height (smaller take-up ratio ) and thus longer life-span.
The ordinary corrugating roll can't be profiled into flute V because if the flute tip is very small, its wear will deteriorate very quickly, and the board produced will be softer and softer. This does not occur to the tungsten carbide corrugating roll.
The flute tip of an ordinary corrugating roll wears fast, the roll diameter will be smaller after refurbishment, while the wear-resistant tungsten carbide corrugating roll has small wears, the diameter after refurbishment is exactly the same as that of a new one.
The more important thing is that during the service life of a tungsten carbide corrugating roll, its flute height hardly changes.
